UNCF Issues Statement on Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program Notification Error
UNCF deeply regrets that an error by a staff member resulted in a miscommunication to some nominators and/or recommenders for students who were not selected to receive scholarships under the 2013 Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program. Although all applicants were sent accurate information by letter and in follow-up e-mail communication from the GMS Program regarding their selection, we recognize the incorrect update sent to their nominators and/or recommenders created stress and disappointment for everyone involved.
To ensure this does not happen again we are revisiting our data management process to affirm that correct checks and balances are in place and are implemented by the Program's staff members. We have apologized for the miscommunication to those nominators and recommenders impacted by our error, and we have expressed our regret for any confusion or inconvenience to them or their students.
The Gates Millennium Scholars Program is an initiative wholly administered by the United Negro College Fund and is not a program of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Neither Bill nor Melinda Gates, the Foundation, nor its staff played any role in the GMS Program's communication error.
